The gospel  songs also helped slaves to communicate. There was an activist by the name of Harriet Tubman who helped slaves escape plantations. The song " Go Down Moses " was a secret way to say there was danger.

At first we thought it was in O'Brother, but it really was in 12 Years A Slave. Slaves  are working and singing a Gospel song. There are many people, not only one. They might be in a jungle or a forest. They are singing during the work. The slaves might be working in a field. Or maybe they are breaking stones with pickaxes. Brice heard the word "Lord."

The text is talking about religion. It speaks about Moses, Moses is a prophet for the Jews, the Christians and the Muslims. This text comes from the Book of Exodus, in the Bible. Moses received a message from the Lord and a rod (a stick), and turned water into blood and killed the fish because the Pharaoh and the Egyptians wouldn't let the Hebrews go. the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, just like the African slaves in America. 

Worksongs 1 : A Gospel Song Today we studied a Gospel song (or, Negro Spiritual ). Gospel is a genre of religious music that is sung in churches by African-American. Its title was Go Down, Moses (Moses is a prophet). We also noticed the lyrics introduced expressions from the Bible ( "thus spoke the Lord ").  This paper of music (or, music sheet) also had notes and melodies. We listened to the songs, and realized we already ( déjà ) heard it, like other Gospel songs ( Happy Day, When the Saints Go Marching In )... Sacha used his mobile phone and chatted a bit too.
