Diabolus in Musica 2
Tritone
Today we studied a short text about a music interval called the diminished fifth, or tritone. An interval is two notes played together or apart. It can also be called a chord.
The text explained that the tritone was said to be dissonant and evil sounding. The author even claimed that the medieval Church banned it. Another name for the tritone was diabolus in musica, "the devil in the music."
Then we listened to a few examples from Classical music to Jazz. These notes had a dreary, and scary effect in Liebermann's Nocturne or in Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and
Celesta. On the other hand, it also had a funny effect to it in the opening theme of the Simpsons, by Danny Elfman.
